12 Partners Join Forces to Improve Ocean Energy Tech

Earlier this month, the first consortium meeting was held in Bilbao, which will work in the coming years, until September 30, 2022, in the European project NEMMO (Next Evolution in Materials and Models for Ocean energy) .

The project aims to design, model and test small-scale prototypes of larger, lighter and more durable composite blades for floating tidal turbines of more than 2 MW to reduce the levelized cost of energy of tides at € 0.15 / kWh.

The NEMMO project outcomes include:

• New simulations tools for high fidelity tidal turbines operation modeling including instantaneous definition of cavitation phenomena.

• Tidal turbine composite blades behavioral models for fatigue, hydrodynamic performance, aging, fouling and cavitation wear.

• N ovel test rigs and test methodologies for fouling, aging, fatigue and cavitation erosion evaluation.

• Active Flow Control appendages, bio-mimetic surfaces and nano-enhanced composites and coatings for high performance tidal turbine composite blades.

• Design methodologies to develop enhanced performance, durability, harsh marine environment resistance and hydrodynamic performance composite blades for tidal turbines.

• The manufacturing of two sets of large scale optimized composites blades for tidal turbines according to the project NEMMO findings

• The full testing, characterization and evaluation of the optimized design including a first tidal cycle trial in a full-scale off-shore demonstrator (EMEC / Scotland, tbc)

NEMMO Consortium is composed of 12 partners from 7 countries:

Tecnalia (Spain), INPRE (Spain), Technion (Israel), Dublin City University (Ireland), ADERA (France), Funditec (Spain), Sagres (Spain), SSPA (Sweden), ITAINNOVA (Spain), Spnano (Israel) ), Ocean Energy Europe (Belgium), and Blaest (Denmark).
