On May 29, 2019, the US Port of Corpus Christi will celebrate the commencement of the Port of Corpus Christi Ship Channel Improvement Project aimed at boosting the port’s oil and natural gas export capacity.
As explained, the commencement of the expansion will mark a significant milestone in the United States’ progress to becoming the net exporter of the nation’s energy production.
Following the 40-year ban on crude oil exports, the Port of Corpus Christi handled the first shipment of US crude oil abroad on December 31, 2015.
Its location on the Gulf of Mexico and proximity to the West Texas oil and gas boom has created a massive increase in demand and traffic for the Port of Corpus Christi.
Three years later, in 2018, the port went from zero crude exports to exporting USD 10.8 billion worth of crude oil to US trading partners contributing to the offset of the United States trade deficit.
As a leading US crude oil export port and a major economic engine of Texas and the nation, the Port of Corpus Christi is now the fourth largest port in the United States in total tonnage.
