Works to Continue on Iqaluit Deepwater Port

Tower Arctic LTD, the contractor for the Iqaluit Deepwater Port Project, recently held a public information session about the works completed so far and provided a timeline of the next steps.

According to the company, since the last meeting in November 2018, Tower Arctic has installed three culverts and armor stones on the access road to the deepsea port and has winterized equipment and construction sites.

Officials expect that the drilling and blasting will recommence in mid-June. These works are scheduled to continue until November 2019.

Tower Arctic added that the dredging of the seabed will start again in early July and is scheduled to wrap up in early August. The company will dredge 14,000 cubic meters of material this year.

They also announced that the project is still on track to be completed by November 2019.

In May 2018, Tower Arctic was awarded a contract to build and repair a marine infrastructure near Koojesse Inlet in Nunavut in the Iqaluit region.

The contract calls for the construction of a deep-water port and the repair of the existing causeway and the municipal harbor.

At 430 meters long, the new deepsea port will allow all-tide access for ocean-going vessels. Fuel tankers will also be able to offload at the dock where there will be a new fuel line, along with the existing fuel line.
