Norwegian oil and gas company Vår Energi has received consent from the Petroleum Safety Authority (PSA) to remove and dispose of the Jotun B platform in the North Sea offshore Norway.
The PSA said on Wednesday that the consent was granted based on documentation submitted with the application.
The safety body added that the developer would pay for and carry out the removal, including full or partial removal of facilities and equipment after the production period has ended.
The removal work must take place under HSE regulations for petroleum activities, and based on considerations including consent and decommissioning plans.
The Jotun field is located in the North Sea, 200 kilometers west of Stavanger. Water depth at the site is 126 meters. The field was developed with two installations, a wellhead platform Jotun B and a production vessel Jotun A.
Production at the Jotun field was permanently shut down in December 2016. Decommissioning activities at the Jotun B installation are currently ongoing.
The Jotun field was previously operated by Point Resources, which merged with Eni Norge in December 2018 to create Vår Energi.
Point Resources became the operator of the field in 2017 after its parent company HitecVision acquired ExxonMobil’s operated upstream business in Norway.
As part of the acquisition, Point resources took over Balder, Ringhorne, Ringhorne East, Jotun, and Forseti fields on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS).
