Norwegian E&P player Aker BP has received consent from the offshore safety body, the Petroleum Safety Authority (PSA), for exploration drilling in the North Sea using the Deepsea Nordkapp drilling rig.

The well, named 24/9-13, is located in the Aker BP-operated production license 869 in the North Sea close to the Bøyla and Alvheim field.

Aker BP operates the license with a 60 percent interest. Partners in the field are Lundin and Vår Energi with 20 percent interest each.

The offshore safety body said on Tuesday that the drilling was planned to start in mid-June 2019 and estimated to last at least 21 days in a water depth of 117.5 meters.

Drilling will be carried out using the Deepsea Nordkapp semi-submersible drilling rig. It is a 6th-generation semi-submersible drilling rig of a Moss Maritime CS60E type, delivered to owner Odfjell Drilling in January.

Aker BP has already been awarded a consent to use a rig on this well once before. It was granted in September 2018 when the PSA stated that the well would be drilled using Saipem’s Scarabeo 8.

The company was also given a drilling permit for a well of the same designation, on the identical coordinates as this one, by the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) at the beginning of November of last year .

The NPD also stated that the rig doing the work would be the Scarabeo 8 after drilling of wildcat well 6406/6-6 S in production license 255 B in the southern part of the Norwegian Sea.
