The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate has granted Equinor a drilling permit for well 6507/2-5 S, which is located in the Norwegian Sea.

The well 6507/2-5 S will be drilled from the West Phoenix drilling rig after completing the drilling of wildcat well 16/1-30 S for Equinor in production license 167.

Equinor has already been cleared by the Petroleum Safety Authority to use the West Phoenix rig for the 6507/2-5 S well. West Phoenix is a semi-submersible drilling rig of the Moss Maritim CS50 type, operated by North Atlantic Drilling (formerly Seadrill Management).

The drilling program for the well relates to the drilling of a wildcat well in production license 942 where Equinor is the operator with an ownership interest of 40 percent. Other licensees are Wellesley Petroleum (30 percent) and Aker BP (30 percent).

The drilling location is on the Dønna terrace, about 20 kilometers northwest of the Skarv field, and approximately 227 kilometers from Brønnøysund. Water depth at the site is 332 meters.

The area in this license consists of part of block 6507/1 and part of block 6507/2. The well will be drilled about seven kilometers southwest of the Marulk field.

Production licences 942 was awarded on March 2, 2018 (APA 2017). This is the first well to be drilled in the license.
