Containerships, a subsidiary of the CMA CGM Group, has taken delivery of its second LNG-powered container vessel Containerships Polar.

Containerships said on Thursday that its second container ship powered by liquefied natural gas, the Containerships Polar, would be phased into the redesigned BALT 2 service in the Port of Rotterdam on June 23, 2019.

With transit times of only 3-5 days, the BALT 2 service links Northern Continental Europe with the Baltic states and Russia. A total of seven major European ports are served, including Teesport, Zeebrugge, Rotterdam, Helsinki, St. Petersburg, Riga, and Gdynia Port.

At the beginning of May, the 1,380 TEU vessel started its voyage from Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard in China to Northern Europe where it will operate alongside its sister ship Containerships Nord. On its way from China, the vessel made a stop at the Malta Freeport Terminal .

The company added that the vessel’s first LNG bunkering would be carried out in Rotterdam at the end of June where it will fuel an approximate of 200mt of LNG via ship-to-ship bunkering.

Also, by the end of the year, two more LNG-powered sister vessels, the Containerships Arctic and Containerships Aurora, will join the company’s fleet.

It is worth reminding that the CMA CGM Group will operate 20 LNG-powered vessels by 2022 .
