South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries, part of Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), has received an order for the construction of two LNG-fueled bulk carriers.
The deal for the vessel duo has been inked with Hyundai Samho’s compatriot shipping company, H-Line Shipping, Korean Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries informed.
Under the contract, Hyundai Samho would construct two 180,000 dwt bulkers. Expected to be delivered to their owner in 2022, the newbuilds will be deployed on a route between South Korea and Australia.
The value of the contract has not been disclosed.
In October last year, H-Line ordered another two bulkers powered by LNG at Hyundai Samho. The vessels will also feature a deadweight of 180,000 tons and will operate on the abovementioned route.
Ahead of the global sulphur cap, the South Korean government is promoting the introduction of LNG-powered ships into its fleet. By providing subsidies for the construction of green vessels, the country is aiming at supporting both the domestic shipping and shipbuilding industries.
