Spanish oil firm Repsol has received consent from the offshore safety body, the Petroleum Safety Authority (PSA), for exploration drilling in the North Sea using the Scarabeo 8 drilling rig.

The well, designated 9/2-12, is located in the production license 910 in the North Sea. Repsol is the operator with an ownership interest of 61.111 percent. Other licensees are Lotos (22.222 percent) and OKEA (16.667 percent).

The prospect, named Kathryn, will be drilled in the south of the northern sector of the North Sea, around six kilometers east of the Yme field and 100 kilometers southwest of Egersund in Rogaland in a water depth of 99 meters.

The PSA said that drilling was scheduled to start in mid-August and is expected to last between 29 and 52 days.

As for the rig, Scarabeo 8 is a semi-submersible drilling rig of the Moss CS 50 MkII design. It was built at the Fincantieri Shipyard and completed at Westcon’s yard in Ølensvåg in 2011.

It is worth reminding that Saipem signed a contract with Repsol Norge back in May for the drilling of a well in Norway. The company said at the time that the well would be drilled by the Scarabeo 8 in the third quarter of 2019.

According to Bassoe Offshore, the estimated dayrate for the Scarabeo 8 under the contract with Repsol is around $295,000.
