The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District, began repairs to the damaged portion of the Buffalo South Breakwater last Friday (July 26).
As USACE reported, the project will repair 625 feet out of the 1,000 feet of the damaged breakwater.
Since its creation, the Buffalo South breakwater has been protecting the shoreline by dissipating the ice and wave action.
According to the Corps, this section of the breakwater slated for repair has experienced some of the most damage and the maintenance to these sections will continue to provide safe navigation.
“ The Corps utilized its U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) to design the repair of a severely degraded reach on the Buffalo south breakwater ,” said Lex Barker, Project Manager . “ The research concluded that a stability berm is required to repair the area due to previous high wind and wave action damaging previous repairs. ”
The Corps also added that this is a critical time to invest in the nation’s infrastructure. Additional operations and maintenance, along with additional federal funding is needed for the entire 1,000 foot reach of the Buffalo South Breakwaters.
