Dutch offshore heavy lift, installation, and transportation firm Jumbo will test the use of bio-fuel oil aboard one of its vessels during an upcoming offshore decommissioning project. Jumbo has teamed up with sustainable marine biofuel company GoodFuels for the project.
“Starting with an initial project, the partnership paves the way for a fossil fuel to renewables energy transition in the offshore support sector – removing infrastructure for fossil fuel production, while simultaneously accelerating the energy transition during that process,” Jumbo said in a statement on Monday.
According to the statement, Bio-Fuel Oil is fully derived from forest residues and waste oil products, and is “expected to deliver 80-90% well-to-propeller CO2 reduction versus fossil equivalents, and contains no sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions – all without any requirement for engine modifications.”
“By testing the Bio-Fuel Oil, we are taking a major step towards a sustainably powered fleet,” Wout Janssens, Director Operations & Engineering at Jumbo said.
Under the project, GoodFuels’ logistics partner VARO Energy will be supplying Bio-Fuel Oil to Jumbo’s offshore vessel, Fairplayer, ahead of its departure to the North Sea. Jumbo did not provide further info on the decommissioning project itself.
