The BorWin3 offshore wind grid connection in the German North Sea has started transmitting power.

According to Petrofac, the 900MW project has begun converting three-phase electric power generated by offshore wind farms into direct current and transmitting it 160km back to shore into the German national grid.

“We are delighted to have reached this key milestone with BorWin3 ready for action,” said George Salibi , Chief Operating Officer – Engineering & Construction at Petrofac.

“The additional grid connection being put into operation is a significant contribution to the energy transition in Germany and a further demonstration of Petrofac’s expansion into adjacent sectors, including renewable energy.”

The consortium of Petrofac and Siemens secured a contract by TenneT in 2014 for BorWin3.

Siemens supplied the HVDC converter technology and main electrical equipment for direct-current transmission, and Petrofac was responsible for the engineering, construction and offshore installation of the platform.
