NKT completed the turnkey project of the 320kV HVDC XLPE offshore and onshore power cable system covering a total transmission length of 160km.

The company’s cable-laying vessel NKT Victoria made its maiden voyage for the work and was used for the installation of power cables and fiber optics on the seabed.

“We are proud to be part of the green transformation of Scotland together with our customer Scottish Hydro Electric Transmission (SHET). This project has also been special to us as it showed impressive performance of our purpose-built cable-laying vessel NKT Victoria,” said NKT’s Claes Westerlind , Executive Vice President and Head of HV Solutions Karlskrona.

The Caithness-Moray power link uses HVDC technology to transmit power through subsea cable beneath the Moray Firth seabed between new converter stations at Spittal in Caithness and Blackhillock in Moray.

The link, which has been in commercial operation since the end of 2018, provides up to 1,200MW of capacity to transmit renewable energy power from across the far north of Scotland.
