Ghanaian company Springfield Exploration and Production Limited (SEP) has started drilling the Afina-1x well, the first of its much anticipated new wells located off the coast of Ghana.

SEP, a subsidiary of Springfield Group, spudded the well on Monday, October 7, using the Stena Forth drillship.

Springfield said on Tuesday that the Stena Forth had arrived in Ghana on Friday, October 4, 2019, after completing its operations for Tullow Oil in Guyana. The drillship drilled two wells in the South American country. It is capable of operating in up to 10,000 feet of water and drilling to a depth of 35,000 feet.

Springfield Group’s CEO, Kevin Okyere , said: “This milestone has been possible because we have not given up in the face of challenges. It is an achievement not to ourselves alone as Springfield, but to all our Partners, Contractors, the government and people of Ghana and Africa as a Continent.”

The Afina-1x well is located at the West Cape Three Points Block 2 (WCTP Block 2) where Springfield is the operator with an 84% interest with the Ghana National Petroleum Company and its exploration company, EXPLORCO, holding the remaining interest.

The Government of Ghana awarded the block to Springfield back in 2016.

After targeting Afina-1x well, the rig will move to drill Oak-1x. The campaign is anticipated to run over a three-month period.
