The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) granted $3 million to San Mateo County to improve the Colma Creek Flood Control Channel recently.

Upgrades will protect the City of South San Francisco from tributary flooding, mitigate the effects of sea level rise beyond the year 2060, and double the channel’s level of flood protection to 100-year events.

The project encompasses sediment and debris removal, repair or replacement of damaged culverts, and restoration of impacted native vegetation within the project limits.

The $4.2 million scheme is funded by a $3 million hazard mitigation grant from FEMA, with non-federal sources covering the remaining $1.2 million.

FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program helps states, territories, federally-recognized tribes, local communities and certain private, non-profit organizations become more resilient to potential infrastructure damage and reduce future disaster costs.
