German liner company Hamburg Süd has announced the introduction of an “environmental fuel fee” (EFF) ahead of the new IMO 2020 regulations that will come into force on January 1, 2020.

The company said the EFF would become effective on December 1, 2019, and would cover the increase in fuel-related costs associated to the implementation of new regulations.

Hamburg Süd said the tariffs were calculated using the price difference between high sulphur fuel and low sulphur fuel. According to the company, the difference calculated is 193,08 USD/ton.

By transferring the fuel bill increase to customers, Hamburg Süd has become the latest company to announce such a surcharge after Maersk, MSC and Hapag-Lloyd all introduced similar bunker recovery mechanisms.
