Col. Aaron Barta, commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District, along with representatives from the Corps LA District’s project delivery team and the Port of Long Beach officials, held a public meetings November 13 at the Port of Long Beach Administration building in Long Beach, California.

Representatives from both the Corps and the Port of Long Beach were available during the two public meetings to discuss and receive comments about the completion of the Long Beach Deep-Draft Navigation Feasibility Study.

The Draft IFR EIS/EIR has also a review period of 45 days, ending December 9, 2019.

The purpose of the proposed project is to identify, evaluate, and improve existing navigation channels within the Port of Long Beach to improve conditions for current and future container and liquid bulk vessel operations and safety, in the event of vessel malfunction or weather-related events.

The scheme, located at Port of Long Beach Federal channels and berths serving Pier J and Pier T/West Basin, deepens existing Federal channels and constructs a new Federal channel and turning basin by dredging and disposing up to approximately 7.4 million cubic yards of sediment.

According to USACE, construction would begin in 2024 and is anticipated to take approximately 39 months to complete.
