Liquefied natural gas technology provider LNT Marine said its LNT A-Box containment system received approval from the United States Coast Guard (USCG).
The LNT A-BOX system is based on proven technologies but in a novel patent-protected configuration. The design is based on an independent tank type A as the primary barrier and a full secondary barrier.
USCG noted in its notice that LNT Marine requested approval of the independent LNT A-Box Type A cargo containment system for liquefied natural gas carriers on behalf of China Merchant Shipyard.
“Based on the design information you have provided, I agree with your conclusion that the LNT A-Box Type A cargo containment system is, in principle, in compliance with the International Code for the Construction and Equipment of Ships carrying Liquefied Gasses in Bulk, 2016 Edition and is eligible for an endorsement,” M. J. Motemerno , commander U.S. Coast Guard, chief of Hazardous Materials Division, said in the response to the LNT Marine request.
The system went through gas trials aboard mid-sized LNG carrier Saga Dawn in July this year.
The ABS-classed Saga Dawn is based on LNT Marine’s LNT45 design whereas the basic design was developed in cooperation with Sweden’s FKAB.
According to LNT Marine, It is the first vessel to operate a completely new LNG containment system in decades.
