Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN) has been awarded a contract by Vocus for fibre-optic cable manufacture and marine works at the proposed Barossa offshore gas project in the Bonaparte Basin, to the north of Darwin, Australia.
The solution developed for the Barossa Project is the design, manufacture and installation of a 500km cable loop, the Bonaparte Basin Cable Loop (BBCL), which will be integrated into the 2,100km Vocus North West Cable System. Following a three-year design and construction phase, Vocus would hold a minimum 15-year service term for the operation and maintenance of the network.

The Barossa project is a Joint Venture between ConocoPhillips (the Operator), SK E&S Australia and Santos. ConocoPhillips Australia believes Barossa is a leading candidate to backfill the Darwin LNG facility when it will no longer be economic to produce gas from the Bayu-Undan field. Barossa would ensure continued operation of the LNG facility for a further 20 plus years, providing ongoing economic and social benefits to Darwin.
