The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) has granted a drilling permit for a wildcat well in the Norwegian Sea to oil and gas company Aker BP.

The well 6506/5-1 S, a prospect named Nidhogg, is located in production license 1008, where Aker BP has a 60 percent interest, while its partner Wellesley Petroleum holds the remaining 40 percent interest.
It will be drilled by the Deepsea Nordkapp drilling rig after concluding the drilling of development wells on the Skogul field in production license 460.
The NPD said that the area in this license consisted of part of block 6506 and part of block 6507. The well will be drilled about 38 kilometers northwest of the Heidrun field and 230 kilometers west of Brønnøysund.
Production license 1008 was awarded on 1 March 2019 in APA 2018 on the Norwegian shelf. This is the first well to be drilled in the license.
As for the rig, the Deepsea Nordkapp drilling rig, a semi-submersible rig of the Moss Maritime CS 60E type owned and operated by Odfjell Drilling.
The rig was issued with an Acknowledgement of Compliance (AoC) by the PSA in April 2019.
It is worth reminding that the Petroleum Safety Authority gave its consent to Aker BP to use the Deepsea Nordkapp rig on the 6506/5-1 S well back in early November .
According to the PSA, the work was scheduled to begin in either November or December 2019 and would last for 27 days.
