The Maryland Public Service Commission (PSC) is holding a public hearing on the potential impact of bigger turbines at the Skipjack and MarWin offshore wind projects.

The event is part of the commission’s limited inquiry into impacts related to changes in the turbine sizes originally anticipated for use at the two offshore wind projects.

The public comment hearing will be held on 18 January in Ocean City at 12:00 local time.

Maryland PSC called for the review as the project developers announced in the fall of 2019 that their project turbine sizes would significantly increase in rotor diameter, blade length, and overall height.

According to the commission, these selections constituted material changes to both projects and opened a limited inquiry into the potential impacts related to the turbine size variations.

To remind, the Maryland PSC awarded offshore wind renewable energy credits (ORECs) to the two projects in May 2017.

Ørsted’s 120MW Skipjack project will feature GE’s Haliade-X 12MW turbines and is expected to be fully commissioned by 2022.

US Wind’s 248MW MarWin offshore wind farm is scheduled to become operational in 2023.
