Works on enabling Able Seaton Port for Triton Knoll wind turbine pre-assembly have begun, including preparing the existing site, establishing new drainage and upgrading the internal electricity supply.
In the coming months, the construction teams will build new infrastructure: access roads, office buildings and accommodation for a project team of around 50 people.
Turbine handling equipment will be set up at the port later in the year.
Teesside’s Able Seaton Port will house the pre-assembly of MHI Vestas 9.5MW wind turbines, with the first components due to arrive later in 2020. The 89-meter turbine towers, 80-meter turbine blades and the 375-tonne nacelles will be prepared for transport and installation at the offshore site in 2021.
Construction of the 875MW offshore wind farm, comprising 90 wind turbines, is already underway. The first foundation was installed in January 2020.
In 2021, installation and energization of wind turbines will be taking place. The first electricity is expected to flow into the UK National Grid later that year.
Able Seaton Port was selected by MHI Vestas Offshore Wind as the Triton Knoll offshore wind turbine pre-assembly base in 2018. The Triton Knoll project company and MHI Vestas are jointly investing in the works at the Teesside facility.
