Japanese shipping giant NYK Line concluded a contract with Shin Kurushima Dockyard to build a second LNG-fueled pure car and truck carrier (PCTC).
The vessel is scheduled to be delivered in 2022 and will become NYK’s second LNG-fueled PCTC, the company said in its statement.
The first vessel NYK unveiled in September 2019, was selected as a model project by Japan’s Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.
The keel for the first vessel, which is lauded by the company as the world’s largest pure car and truck carrier (PCTC) capable of navigating oceans with only LNG as the main fuel, has been laid in September at Shin Kurushima Toyohashi Shipbuilding.

The new vessel will be able to transport approximately 7,000 units (standard vehicle equivalent) per voyage.
NYK further added that both vessels will have an overall length of about 199.95 meters, breadth of about 36 meters and gross tonnage of 73,500 tons.
NYK has positioned LNG fuel as one of the bridging technologies to realize future zero-emission ships. The company aims to have a clean transportation mode that will reduce the environmental burden of the entire PCTC fleet.
