TIGER: Orbital Scouts Turbine Dynamic Controller Expert

Scottish engineering company Orbital Marine Power is looking for experts in turbine dynamic controller design as part of the Tidal Stream Industry Energiser Project, known as TIGER.

In parallel to its O2-2000 turbine build, Orbital is running an innovations project to identify key innovations and design improvements that can deliver further reductions in the Levelised Cost of Energy (LCOE).

One of the areas of innovation in the project is to develop and improve the turbine dynamic controller.

The €46.8-million TIGER project is close to 70 percent funded by the European Regional Development Fund via the Interreg France (Channel) England Programme.

Led by the UK’s Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult, from its office in Hayle, Cornwall, TIGER comprises 19 partners, including Orbital, from across the UK and France spanning turbine developers, ocean energy demonstration sites, research organisations, as well local and regional authorities.

The project is the largest ever to be approved not only by the France (Channel) England Programme but by any Interreg programme.

The long-term aim of the project is to support the industry to reduce generating costs of tidal stream energy from the existing 300€ MW/h to 150€ MW/h by 2025 and increase uptake. There is an EU target to reach 100€/MWh by 2030.

Orbital will keep the tender open until March 18, 2020.
