Norwegian seismic firms PGS and TGS have released final 3D seismic data results offshore Newfoundland and Labrador ahead of the C-NLOPB announcement of parcels and the forthcoming 2020 Eastern Newfoundland licensing round.
The fully merged and migrated Tablelands and North Tablelands 3D datasets cover approximately 12,500 square kilometers in the eastern part of the Orphan Basin.
According to TGS’ update on Tuesday, the uplift in image quality provided by these datasets will enable E&P companies to fully evaluate this acreage ahead of the scheduled licensing round. The final full integrity data delineates key Cretaceous and Jurassic source rock intervals, with potential producing reservoirs from Lower Cretaceous to Lower Tertiary.
TGS stated that the Tablelands and North Tablelands datasets, together with the long-range survey to the south, revealed the play fairways of the Orphan Basin, demonstrating the numerous horsts, grabens, and multiple prospective traps.
All the necessary petroleum system elements in the Orphan Basin and discoveries to the east are identified on the broadband GeoStreamer data.
A quantitative interpretation of the final North Tablelands results will be available in April for participants in the round.
In a separate statement, Jerry Witney , manager of new ventures for North and South America at PGS, said: “Through several years of high-quality 3D data acquisition and processing, we have built significant geological and operational experience in Newfoundland and Labrador.
“This is reflected in our MultiClient data library, and positions us well to support E&P companies drilling and exploration activities. Full integrity data from Orphan Basin will benefit all oil companies interested in exploring this high-potential area, and participating in upcoming license rounds. There is a high level of customer interest in this data”
It is worth noting that TGS, in partnership with PGS, has been acquiring 2D and 3D GeoStreamer multi-client data in Newfoundland and Labrador since 2011.
The data outlines play fairways across offshore eastern Canada, including Labrador Sea, Orphan Basin, Flemish Pass Basin, Jeanne d’Arc Basins, and the basins in Grand Banks. The partnership has an extensive seismic library offshore eastern Canada with comprehensive geological products.
