On Friday, 3 April, EnBW marked the ninth year of operation of its Baltic 1 offshore wind farm – Germany’s first commercial scale offshore wind farm and the first offshore wind project EnBW built.

“Baltic 1 is the first commercial scale offshore wind farm in Germany; its electricity output reaches 185 million kilowatt hours on an annual basis, covering 50,000 households per annum and preventing 167,000 tonnes of harmful CO₂ from being released into the environment each year. Moreover, the wind farm has boosted economic development and created new jobs in the nearby town of Barhöft” , EnBW said via social media.

The first wind turbine at Baltic 1 fed the first kilowatt hour of electricity into the grid on 3 April 2011. The offshore wind farm was inaugurated a month later, on 2 May 2011.

The 48.3 MW Baltic 1 features 21 Siemens SWT-2.3-93 turbines, installed in the German sector of the Baltic Sea, some 15 kilometres north of the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula.
