Kvaerner has awarded Scana Offshore with a contract for the supply of mooring equipment for the Hywind Tampen floating offshore wind project in Norway.

Scana Offshore will deliver 33 hull brackets, used to attach anchoring lines to the hulls on the project’s 11 turbines, and will provide ROV tools for possible replacement of the anchor lines.

The contract is said to be the company’s first hardware contract in the floating offshore wind market.

Work will start immediately, with the anchoring equipment expected to be delivered to Kvaerner in the spring of 2021.

“We have a long track record of deliveries to the oil, gas and aquaculture market. Now we are looking forward to delivering mooring equipment to floating wind power as well – a market with great potential,” said Torkjell Lisland , Managing Director of Scana Offshore.

“In order to get into offshore wind and aquaculture, we have developed new and cost-reducing technology. The Hywind Tampen contract represents a breakthrough for this technology and provides feedback that Scana Offshore’s focus on continuous product development is the right way to go.”

In February last year, Kvaerner won a contract to study how floating concrete substructures for the wind farm’s turbines can be designed and constructed. The company will also deliver marine operations with DOF Subsea.

Hywind Tampen will be directly connected to Equinor’s Gullfaks and Snorre oil & gas platforms, becoming the world’s first such offshore wind farm.

It will feature 11 8 MW turbines which will be capable of meeting about 35% of the annual power demand of the Snorre A and B, and Gullfaks A, B and C platforms. Commissioning is scheduled for late 2022.
