Wind turbines and foundations for the 12 MW Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) demonstration project have arrived in the Port of Halifax in Nova Scotia, Canada.

Last week, the Bigroll Beaufort cargo vessel picked up the monopile foundations in Rostock, Germany, and the wind turbine components in Esbjerg, Denmark.

The 12 MW pilot project will comprise two 6 MW Siemens Gamesa turbines, installed on EEW’s monopile foundations, some 43.5 kilometres off the coast of Virginia Beach.

Offshore construction is set to start later this spring.

Meanwhile, geophysical surveys for the 2,600 MW CVOW offshore wind farm – to be built starting in 2024 – are progressing according to schedule and with measures in place to navigate the impact of the current global pandemic, according to Dominion Energy.

The surveys are being carried out by TerraSond, which contracted two vessels, the M/V Sarah Bordelon and M/V Marcelle Bordelon for this purpose.

The surveys will inform the project’s Construction and Operations Plan to be submitted to the U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) later this year.
