NGI monitoring kit for Kriegers Flak foundations

Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) has won the contract for a structural measurement campaign at Vattenfall’s Kriegers Flak offshore wind farm.

The scope of the contract covers the design, production, and installation of instrumentation on two offshore wind turbines which will monitor the monopiles and the transition pieces.

The instrumentation system supplied by NGI will provide data to fully monitor the structures during operation after installation. The recorded data will be transmitted to shore at given intervals for further analysis.

The system installations at the manufacturing yards are planned to be completed in May 2020 and final offshore commissioning is set for summer 2021.

“Being one of Vattenfall’s important partners on the Danish Kriegers Flak Wind Farm is an important step for NGI,” said Morten Saue , NGI’s Head of Section for Instrumentation and Monitoring.

“This opportunity will allow NGI to provide high quality Structural Health Monitoring data to an important Client, and it opens up for future collaboration in smarter use of data in combination with advanced modelling techniques.”

Kriegers Flak is located 15-40 kilometres off the Danish coast in the Baltic Sea.

The 604.8 MW wind farm will comprise 72 Siemens Gamesa 8.4 MW turbines installed on monopile foundations.

The offshore construction at the site started earlier this month with the installation of the first monopile. The wind farm is scheduled to be commissioned in 2021.
