Exowave to demonstrate wave energy plant at DanWEC

Clean energy technology start-up Exowave has signed an agreement with DanWEC (Danish Wave Energy Center) to demonstrate its multi-use wave energy device off Hanstholm in Denmark.

Clean energy technology start-up Exowave has signed an agreement with DanWEC (Danish Wave Energy Center) to demonstrate its multi-use wave energy device off Hanstholm in Denmark.

The demonstration is planned to take place in the autumn of 2021, according to the information provided by the Thisted municipality, where the DanWEC test site is located.

The project is expected to demonstrate Exowave technology’s capabilities to combine wave energy extraction with desalination for pure water production that can be used for hydrogen generation.

The demonstration at DanWEC has been supported with a grant of almost DKK 4.5 million (approximately €600,000) which Exowave secured from the Danish EUDP (Energy Technology Development and Demonstration Program).

“Our long-term goal is to implement large scale installations in connection with offshore wind farms. But it is natural to start with something on a smaller scale that is closer to land and which is at the same time a realistic offshore environment”, Exowave’s chairman of the board Martin Dahl said.

The Exowave wave energy device is an oscillating wave surge converter that extracts the kinetic energy from the ocean waves through bottom-hinged flaps.

The technology can be coupled with complementary market solutions to produce green electricity, cooling of data centres, fresh water for households, agricultural and industry use.
