Norwegian Electric Systems (NES) has won a contract from Green Yard Kleven to deliver the energy design and smart control solution to Rem Offshore’s new construction service vessel (CSV).

NES will supply the energy design and system solution with a battery pack for the vessel named Rem Energy, while the delivery also includes options to expand with a larger battery pack in the future.

According to the company, the 10 MW battery pack permits running with zero emissions when operating at an offshore wind farm, and will be charged via a buoy once such infrastructure is in place. Space is also allocated for future installation of fuel cells.

The hybrid vessel, now being outfitted at Green Yard Kleven, will be the first support vessel for offshore wind to adopt the fully integrated RAVEN INS integrated navigation system from NES.

“This battery pack means that the ship can reduce diesel consumption and thereby cut its CO2 emissions substantially. Our experience with comparable solutions shows that the vessel could achieve savings of about 20 per cent when operating with DP2 dynamic positioning,” said Geir Larsen , NES CEO.

“These cuts will be even higher when it’s berthed. In addition, the owner will secure savings on maintaining the diesel engines since their running hours will be reduced.”

In December last year, Rem Offshore signed a contract with Green Yard Kleven in Ulsteinvik, Norway, to build the CSV tailormade for operations on offshore wind installations.

The vessel, designed by Havyard Design & Solutions, will serve a five-year contract for Siemens Gamesa at the Global Tech 1 offshore wind farm.
