A Maltese-flagged bulk carrier Afina I has collided with Liberia-flagged bulker Kiveli northwest of Kythira island, Greece, causing water ingress to both ships.
According to the Greek Coast Guard, which sent several patrol boats and anti-pollution vessels to the site, there has been no marine pollution detected at the site.
Several measures of precaution have been undertaken to mitigate any potential pollution from the collision, the coast guard said on Saturday, adding that a private company has been assigned by the relevant shipowners to protect the marine environment.
As informed, there were no injuries reported to the crews of the two vessels. Specifically, Afina I had 18 crew members, while Kiveli had 24 seafarers on board when the collision took place.
The latest update shows that the ships were towed to Vatika Bay, and are at anchor at Neapoli Anchorage, Greece, with support vessels at their side monitoring the situation.
Anti-pollution booms have been placed around the vessels to prevent any pollution.
