U.S. alternative fuels supplier Clean Energy Fuels and technology company Amazon have signed an agreement to provide low and negative carbon renewable natural gas (RNG).

Renewable natural gas (RNG) is derived from biogenic methane produced by the breakdown of organic waste. Through its sales, Clean Energy managed to reduce the amount of climate-harming greenhouse gas from 60 per cent to over 400 per cent depending on the source of the RNG, according to the California Air Resources Board.

Under the new agreement, Clean Energy will be providing RNG at its 27 existing stations and another 19 new or upgraded Clean Energy-owned stations to be constructed by the end of the year.

These stations will provide this fuel in 15 different states in the U.S.

Andrew J. Littlefair , CEO and president of Clean Energy., said: “If the world is really going to tackle the issue of climate change, all of us need to find solutions that work both environmentally and economically, and that is exactly what this agreement supports. Clean Energy was the first to commercially make RNG available as a vehicle fuel in 2013 and now fuels tens of thousands of vehicles across the country every day.”

In addition, Clean Energy issued a warrant to Amazon to purchase up to 53.1 million shares in the company. For more information, see Clean Energy’s Form 8-K .
