TGS has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with carbontech start-up Horisont Energi to jointly develop new carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies.
Under the MoU, the parties will collaborate to identify and develop methods for the identification and classification of CO2 storage reservoirs, as well as 4D monitoring technology for the surveillance of CO2 injection.

Using imaging and monitoring technologies such as 4D seismic, Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS), and P-Cable technology, TGS and Horisont Energi aim to de-risk and monitor potential CCS reservoirs in Norwegian waters.
The research will initially focus on Horisont Energi’s acreage on the Norwegian continental shelf.
Initiatives may implement both active and passive geophysical methods and include seismic processing focused on optimized vertical and horizontal resolution at reservoir level and in the overburden, TGS said.
Besides technological benefits, the companies are seeking to promote cooperation between industry, commercial technology providers, and academia to boost global CCS advancement.

“Industrial decarbonization is central to reaching net-zero emissions targets and CCS will be a key component in achieving this. Horisont Energi aims to provide cost-leading carbon storage across the Norwegian Continental Shelf in the coming years.”
Horisont Energi also recently signed an MoU with oilfield services major Baker Hughes for the Polaris carbon storage project in the Barents Sea, which is part of the Barents Blue project – the first global and full-scale carbon neutral “ blue ” ammonia production plant.
The agreement will see the companies explore the development and integration of technologies to minimize the carbon footprint, cost and delivery time of carbon capture, transport, and storage (CCTS).
