An offshore worker has died following an incident with a shut-in well in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico.

U.S. oil and gas company Fieldwood Energy said in a statement over the weekend that on 15 May 2021 a fatal incident occurred involving a contractor at the Eugene Island 158 #14 offshore facility in the Gulf of Mexico during a non-emergency casing pressure test on a shut-in well.

The company added that no other personnel were injured in the offshore incident and the shut-in well remains secure and poses no threat of environmental harm.

Details of the incident are still being established and an investigation into the incident is currently underway.

“We have notified and are working with the appropriate regulatory agencies. We have no additional details to share at this time”, the company concluded.

Fieldwood is currently under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, filed back in August 2020.

At the time of filing, the company said it had expected to have access to sufficient liquidity to meet financial obligations during the restructuring, including cash on hand and a debtor-in-possession facility provided by certain of its first-lien term loan lenders.

This was not Fieldwood’s first Chapter 11 in recent years. Namely, Fieldwood had filed for bankruptcy back in February 2018 and emerged in April of the same year.
