NBO delivers Skye and Harris replacement subsea cable

Ningbo Orient Cable (NBO) has delivered the 33 kV subsea cable for the SSEN Skye-Harris cable replacement project in the UK.

NBO completed the production of the 38 kilometers of 33 kV submarine cable after four months of work and loaded it onto the transportation vessel.

The cable will now be transported to the UK and installed in the latter half of the year.

The Chinese company also reported that it had used its own Remote Monitoring System (RMS) for the first time, which enabled the client to check the production status, loadout process, and logistics tracks in real-time.

NBO secured the contract from Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) Distribution at the end of last year to provide the replacement cables.

The cable order came as SSEN received an alert on 16 October 2020 for a fault on its network which temporarily interrupted power supplies to 13,600 customers on Lewis and Harris.

Based on the more than 100 meters deep water at the fault location, the electricity supplier ruled out the repair option and went for a full cable replacement .
