The Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund (HRADF) has awarded a trifecta of contracts for the planned underwater natural gas storage (UGS) at the South Kavala gas field offshore Northern Greece.

The South Kavala gas field covers an area of 5 square kilometers and is located in the Gulf of Kavala, 11 kilometers south of the Prinos oil field and at a depth of 1,700 meters.

HRADF appointed Schlumberger Logelco INC as the advisor for technical studies in relation to the UGS facility, who is set to carry out detailed technical studies and prepare relevant reports to support the conversion of the almost depleted offshore natural gas field into an UGS.

Schlumberger’s Greek branch will provide a geological and petrophysical analysis report, and LAS files, reservoir engineering data analysis report, static modeling and geomechanical analysis report and models, as well as dynamic modeling report, simulation files and simulation results.

The Greek privatization agency selected SEAL Energy for the provision of specialized technical services for the project.

The assignment is divided into the preparatory phase and the implementation phase. The advisor’s scope of work will be based on existing data and no collection of raw data or procurement of new data will be required.

Furthermore, Pricewaterhousecoopers Business Solutions will act as the financial advisor to support the assessment of alternative development and exploitation options for the South Kavala UGS.

Currently, the South Kavala gas field in the Thracian Sea is in use by Energean Oil & Gas.

According to the preliminary planning of the project, the UGS is estimated at 1 billion cubic meters. The annual volume throughput is estimated at 360 million Nm3 or 720 million Nm3 for one or two cycles per year, respectively.

The maximum daily extraction rate and natural gas injection rate in the National Natural Gas Transmission System (ΕΣΜΦΑ) is estimated at 4 million Nm3/d. The maximum daily injection rate of the Underground Gas Storage with natural gas is estimated at 5 million Nm3/d, HRADF concluded.
