ADNOC and 3 Japan's players to study hydrogen and blue ammonia

The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and Japan’s INPEX, JERA and JOGMEC will explore the commercial potential of producing and transporting clean ammonia to Japan.

This agreement builds on ADNOC’s low-carbon fuels initiatives and experience in carbon capture and storage (CCS).

Blue ammonia is made from nitrogen and blue hydrogen derived from natural gas feedstocks, with the CO2 by-product from hydrogen production captured and stored.

Ammonia is expected to be used as fuel for power generation and marine transportation in line with global movements toward the net-zero carbon future.

Clean ammonia will be produced in Abu Dhabi from natural gas-derived hydrogen. Most of the CO2 emitted from the production of ammonia will be sequestered and utilized in enhanced oil recovery operations at Abu Dhabi oil fields in which INPEX has a participating interest.

The joint study will last approximately until November.

Japanese oil company INPEX, n its net-zero carbon by 2050 strategy, outlined the advent of a hydrogen era. In close cooperation with ADNOC, it wants to build a hydrogen and ammonia supply chain linking Japan with Abu Dhabi.

Japanese energy giant JERA has been working to eliminate CO2 emissions from its domestic and overseas businesses by 2050, promoting the adoption of greener fuels.

The Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC) presented its carbon-neutral initiative in April. Under this initiative, JOGMEC will support the CCS business and the clean hydrogen and ammonia business through CCS technical support.

Including the implementation of this joint study, JOGMEC is to further promote international cooperation in the fields of CCS, clean hydrogen and ammonia.
