Cheniere LNG used for GHG life cycle assessment study

U.S. LNG exporter Cheniere Energy publicizes a liquefied natural gas life cycle assessment study which allows for improved greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions assessment.

Cheniere LNG used for GHG life cycle assesment study

U.S. LNG exporter Cheniere Energy publicizes a liquefied natural gas life cycle assessment study which allows for improved greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions assessment.

American Chemical Society Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering Journal published this first-of-its-kind analysis on life-cycle assessment for emission accounting. In fact, the study used GHG emissions data specific to Cheniere’s LNG supply chain from natural gas production through liquefied natural gas shipping.

The study is co-authored by individuals from the University of Texas, Queen Mary University of London, Duke University, KeyLogic Systems, and Cheniere.

The previous studies used generic national or regional data to assess U.S. LNG emissions. In comparison to those, this study provided an improved methodology for GHG emissions accounting.

On the whole, the use of supply chain-specific data estimated a lower GHG intensity for Cheniere’s LNG.

Cheniere Energy says its life cycle assessment will be the analytical tool to estimate GHG emissions that will be included in its cargo emissions tags (CE Tags). Further collaboration with natural gas suppliers, midstream infrastructure owners, and shipowners, will enhance it over time.

Jack Fusco , Cheniere’s president and CEO, said: “We believe this study highlights the importance of customized, supplier-specific LNG emissions analysis and will enhance the accuracy and transparency of our GHG emissions profile to better inform all of our stakeholders.”
