Hollandse Kust Zuid export cable in place

DEME Group’s cable-laying vessel Living Stone has completed the installation of the export cable for the Hollandse Kust Zuid offshore wind project in the Netherlands.

The cable will connect the HKZ Beta offshore platform to the Dutch mainland.

According to DEME, the project included the crossing of the Maasmond shipping route, characterized by heavy traffic to and from the Port of Rotterdam.

TenneT is developing the Hollandse Kust Zuid offshore grid for the connection of the 1.5 GW wind farm. The first two cables for the HKZ Alpha were installed in September 2020.

In total, Living Stone installed two 34-kilometer export cables and an 8-kilometer interlink cable.

To remind, the consortium between Van Oord and Hellenic Cables won a contract by TenneT in 2018 for the connection of the Hollandse Kust Zuid (HKZ) Alpha and Beta offshore platforms.

The Hollandse Kust Zuid zone comprises four offshore wind farms that will be connected to the two substations.

The project will comprise up to 140 Siemens Gamesa 11 MW turbines. Once up and running in 2023, it will become the largest offshore wind farm in the Netherlands.
