Emissions control specialist Eminox and turbocharger maker Kompressorenbau Bannewitz (KBB) have teamed up to meet emissions compliance requirements for marine diesel engines.
The companies will collaborate to offer a fully integrated emissions control solution to marine engine manufacturers and vessel operators, thus providing clean marine diesel engines.
The solution targets medium-speed engines over 1 MW power and brings together KBB’s expertise in marine turbocharging and air handling with Eminox’s EMx exhaust after-treatment system (EATS) technology.
As described, the end-to-end solution will incorporate the design, manufacture, installation, and certification together with service, maintenance and aftersales support from KBB and Eminox.
Said to remove the need for engine manufacturers to assemble components from multiple suppliers or undertake their own testing and type/class approval certification, the KBB-Eminox solution is optimised for specific engines and increases performance efficiency and the effectiveness of emissions reduction.
As part of the maritime industry’s commitment to achieving a zero-carbon future, diesel engines are subject to International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Tier I and Tier II regulations.
Additionally, every vessel entering specific emission control areas (ECAs), including the Baltic Sea, North Sea and North American ECAs must meet IMO Tier III targets and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions requirements, while Stage V regulations apply for vessels operating on European Inland Waterways.
Future legislation, including an update to the marine Stage V regulations and IMO IV are expected to set lower NOx emissions targets and introduce controls on particulates from the early 2030s.

According to KBB and Eminox, the solution is designed for over 20 years of service and is upgradeable as and when legislation changes. Replacement parts are also available through KBB’s global service network.
