British oil and gas company BP is planning HyGreen Teesside, a new large-scale green hydrogen production facility in the North East of England.
The HyGreen Teesside could deliver up to 500-megawatt electrical input (Mwe) of hydrogen production by 2030.
Together with BP’s H2Teesside blue hydrogen project, this will strengthen Teesside as the UK’s leading hydrogen hub . Specifically, HyGreen Teesside and H2Teesside together have the potential to deliver 30 per cent of the UK’s 2030 target for hydrogen production.
Industries in Teesside account for over 5 per cent of the UK’s industrial emissions. The region is also home to five of the country’s top 25 emitters.
The new project will roll out in multiple stages. BP is aiming to start production by 2025, with an initial phase of some 60 MWe of green hydrogen production. A final investment decision on the project will take place in 2023.
BPs blue and green hydrogen projects in Teesside, together with the proposed Net Zero Teesside power project, are to further support economic development. They also push for decarbonisation of heavy industries and transport.

This is exactly the type of energy we want to create and more importantly deliver.”
Furthermore, BP already announced a series of deals with potential industrial customers for hydrogen in the Teesside area.
HyGreen Teesside is BP’s first green hydrogen project in the UK. The company is also pursuing projects for green H2 production at its refineries in Netherlands, Germany, and Spain.

In addition, it carried out a feasibility study identifying opportunities for green hydrogen production in Western Australia. It is also the preferred bidder to develop a green hydrogen production hub in Aberdeen.
