Fincantieri’s U.S. subsidiary Fincantieri Marine Group (FMG) has joined Green Marine, a voluntary environmental certification program for North America’s maritime industry.
Fincantieri Marinette Marine (FMM) shipbuilder and Fincantieri ACE Marine aluminum construction facility are the first two shipyards in Wisconsin to join the program under which their environmental performance will be assessed.
“Fincantieri has a global reputation for being one of the largest and most diverse shipbuilders in the maritime industry”, said Dario Deste , president and CEO of Fincantieri Marine Group. “But we also continue charting bold initiatives in sustainability and innovation, and that includes our efforts in the U.S”.
The move is in line with the FMG’s aim to operate in the most sustainable manner. The company said that during recent expansion work done at FMM, the shipyard worked with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to ensure the health and safety of the environment and to limit disruptions to recreational use of the Menominee River.
The nearly complete $300 million capital expansion program for the Fincantieri U.S. shipyards includes many new climate-controlled facilities and the country’s largest ship lift to ease ships in and out of the water while minimizing impact to the Menominee River ecosystem, FMG explained.
To complete its certification, each Fincantieri shipyard will assess its environmental performance based on Green Marine’s applicable indicators, which include greenhouse gases and air pollutants, spill prevention, waste management, community impacts, and environmental leadership.
Apart from the annual certification process, the individual performance of each participant is independently verified every two years.
“We’re so pleased to welcome the renowned Fincantieri into Green Marine where it can benchmark its progress along with ten other U.S. and Canadian shipyards and more than 140 ship owners, ports, and terminals in North America” , said David Bolduc , Green Marine’s executive director.
In December 2021, Ports America , North America’s largest marine terminal operator, revealed plans to enrol its terminals as participants of Green Marine. The Baltimore terminal was the first to join the program with other terminals to follow.
In addition to the U.S. and Canada, the certification program was also launched in Europe in 2020 through the Green Marine and Surfrider Foundation Europe partnership. The Green Marine Europe label aims to help maritime companies identify and reduce their environmental footprint while informing consumers of the impact of their goods.
