Offshore drilling contractor Stena Drilling has secured a new contract for a semi-submersible rig with TotalEnergies for operations off the UK.

Stena revealed on Friday that the contract has been awarded to its Stena Spey drilling rig. The operations for the rig in the UKCS are due to begin between 16 March 2022 and 15 April 2022, with an estimated total scope duration of 120 days.

“Stena Drilling are delighted to secure work with TotalEnergies in the UKCS and look forward to working with the company during this period,” the rig owner commented.

The 1983-built Stena Spey rig was last year used for the decommissioning campaign of the Kinsale area gas fields located off Ireland. The campaign started in mid-April 2021 following the arrival of the rig and was expected to run through to November 2021.

As reported in October 2021, the rig was set to head to its final location as part of this campaign, at the Ballycotton gas field .

After its arrival in the Ballycotton field, it was anticipated that the rig would continue to operate there until mid-November as a minimum, depending on operational progress. Following completion of activities in the Ballycotton area, the rig was to relocate to Scapa Flow, Orkney .

At the beginning of this month, Stena secured another UK job for its other semi-submersible rig, Stena Don . Under the contract with Petrofac and in support of Tailwind Energy’s Gannet E field, the rig will start operations in 4Q 2022 for an estimated duration of 80 days.
