Impact Assessment Agency of Canada made funding available to help the public and Indigenous groups participate in the impact assessment process for the proposed Ksi Lisims LNG terminal project.
The Nisga’a Nation, Rockies LNG, and Western LNG proposed to develop a floating natural gas liquefaction facility and marine terminal. The Ksi Lisims LNG is located at Wil Milit on Pearse Island, in British Columbia.
As proposed, the Ksi Lisims LNG would produce up to 12 million tonnes per year of liquefied natural gas . It will be in operation for at least 30 years.
To clarify, Ksi Lisims means ‘from the Nass River’ in the Nisga’a language.
Davis Thames , Western LNG CEO, said: “This project will be important to the global LNG industry as it navigates the energy transition. ” He also added it will achieve one of the world’s lowest unit carbon emissions rates for a large-scale LNG export project.
Now, funding is available for individuals and groups to assist their participation in the impact assessment’s planning phase. Specifically, this is for reviewing and providing comments on the draft information requirements that will inform the assessment.
Moreover, the project is subject to the federal Impact Assessment Act and British Columbia’s Environmental Assessment Act.
Applications received by 20 March 2022 will go under consideration.
As a next step, the Agency will determine whether a federal impact assessment is required for the project. If it is, the federal minister will consider the request for the B.C. to conduct the assessment. If approved, the Agency will continue to provide funding to support the participation of the public and Indigenous groups in the process.
