QatarEnergy talks long-term LNG supplies to Germany

Qatar’s state-owned oil and gas company QatarEnergy has agreed to progress discussions on long-term LNG supplies from Qatar to Germany.

QatarEnergy said in a statement on Sunday it has been in talks with German firms on the supply of Qatari LNG to Germany for a number of years. However, until recently, such discussions did not materialize into definitive agreements.

This was mainly due to the lack of clarity on the long-term role of gas in Germany’s energy mix and the requisite LNG import infrastructure.

CEO of QatarEnergy Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi and Germany’s minister of climate action Robert Habeck attended a meeting on 20 March.

At the meeting, Habeck confirmed that the government has taken concrete actions to fast-track the development of two LNG receiving terminals. This is, in fact, a matter of priority in order to allow for the long term import of LNG to Germany. Such a scheme has the full support of the German government.

Therefore, the parties agreed that their respective commercial entities would re-engage and progress discussions on long-term LNG supplies from Qatar to Germany.

At the end of the last month, Germany revealed plans to build two LNG terminals in an effort to reduce dependence on Russian gas. The plan is for these terminals to be located in Brunsbüttel and Wilhelmshaven.
