L&T and IIT Bombay join in on green hydrogen tech development

Indian engineering firm Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay signed a deal to pursue research and development work in the green hydrogen value chain.

Both the institutions say they want to contribute to the development of the green hydrogen industry in India and to develop next-generation technology in this field.

L&T’s engineering expertise and IIT Bombay ’s research in hydrogen technologies are to help this partnership accomplish its goal.

S N Subrahmanyan , CEO of L&T, said, “This collaboration with IIT Bombay (…) will support the cause of developing indigenous globally competitive technologies and nudge India towards AatmaNirbhar in green hydrogen technology.”

Subhasis Chaudhuri , director of IIT Bombay, said: “Given the urgency of the climate crisis and India’s own ambitious target of becoming net-zero by 2070, transition from fossil fuel to green H 2 will play a key role in this goal. India’s National Hydrogen Mission is a step in the right direction, and I am confident that our partnership with L&T will result in scalable and cost-effective solutions.”

Technology plays a central role in the growth of an emerging industry like green hydrogen. Research and development in areas to improve energy efficiency, reliability and reducing equipment costs is crucial to improve affordability. Thus, L&T is collaborating with IIT Bombay is to support the development of the Indian R&D ecosystem and technology.

In February 2022, the Central Government notified the green H2 policy aimed at boosting the production of green hydrogen and green ammonia to help the nation become a global hub.

For countries like India, green H2 will help provide crucial energy security by reducing the overall dependence on imported fossil fuels.
