Canada’s national association for offshore renewable energies Marine Renewables Canada has formalised a collaboration with the European Leaders of Blue Energy (ELBE) Alliance focused on the marine energy and offshore wind sectors.
As part of the partnership, Marine Renewables Canada will work with ELBE to support partnerships, knowledge transfer and supply chain growth in tidal energy, offshore wind and wave energy amongst their collective memberships.
ELBE Alliance aims to contribute to positioning Europe as the world’s technological and industrial leader in Blue Energy, with a special focus on offshore wind, wave and tidal energy.
It gathers seven European clusters with expert companies and R&D organisations in Blue Energy to tackle the expansion of this sector beyond Europe.
The main goal of the alliance is to support and reinforce the internationalisation of European SMEs and other relevant stakeholders in selected Blue Energy markets in North America (US, Canada) and Asia (Japan, Korea, Taiwan), while also identifying new potential markets for upcoming activities.
A year ago, in response to the Government of Canada’s consultation on its Blue Economy strategy, Marine Renewables Canada provided a submission that outlines a vision for the marine renewable energy sector and key actions to support its growth.
The paper offers six recommendations, including the establishment of a department within the federal government tasked with building the marine renewable energy sector from an economic development perspective.
According to the association, Canada’s largely untapped marine renewable energy resources offer the potential to drive the Blue Economy strategy in a way that no other ocean sector can.
Earlier this year, Marine Renewables Canada released a report summarizing its activities in tidal, wave, and offshore wind sector in 2021.
Marine renewable energy projects and R&D are progressing in Canada, with several tidal energy developers approaching deployments as a next step in 2022, new partnerships to accelerate integration in remote communities, and a growing focus on how to support offshore wind development, the report shows.
