US engineering company KBR has secured a technology contract for a low-carbon blue ammonia project in the United States being developed by the Dutch producer and distributor of hydrogen products OCI NV.
KBR was awarded the deal by an EPC contractor Tecnimont S.p.A. to supply the technology license, basic engineering design, proprietary equipment and catalyst for the 1.1 million ton per annum blue ammonia plant.
Targeting completion by 2025, the project will be designed to transition from blue to green ammonia production as green hydrogen becomes available a larger scale in the future.

Last month, KBR was contracted to conduct a study to develop a carbon-neutral, green ammonia-based power system for a semi-submersible drilling unit owned by Odfjell.
The company also has a global licensing agreement with offshore engineering and construction services player McDermott to provide integrated solutions for its ammonia technologies.
McDermott and KBR seek to evaluate opportunities to provide modularized execution concepts to drive additional efficiencies tailored to the needs of green and blue ammonia projects.
