Jemena picks construction partners for Port Kembla LNG pipeline connection

Australian energy infrastructure company Jemena has partnered with three engineering and construction firms to connect the country’s first LNG import terminal at Port Kembla to the Eastern Gas Pipeline (EGP).

Specifically, Jemena partnered with Zinfra, Nacap and Wasco to build a 12-kilometre underground pipeline which will transport up to 130 petajoules of gas annually from Squadron Energy ’s Port Kembla Energy Terminal (PKET) to customers in New South Wales (NSW) and Victoria via the EGP.

According to Jemena’s Executive General Manager of Gas Markets, Antoon Boey , Zinfra will provide project management and engineering services for the project and Nacap will construct the pipeline itself.

Wasco will deliver the Kembla Grange Metering Station, where the underground pipeline connects to the EGP.

Once commissioned, the pipeline will be able to transport enough gas to meet more than 75% of NSW’s current gas needs, Jemana said.

Last year, Australian Industrial Energy (AIE), a part of Squadron Energy, signed a long-term charter deal with energy infrastructure provider Höegh LNG to supply the first floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) for the Port Kembla terminal .

Wasco Australia’s Managing Director, Mel Whyte , commented on the partnership: “Wasco is very pleased to be selected by Jemena to deliver the Kembla Grange facilities as part of this important natural gas project. Our relationship with Jemena grows as we continue to complete infrastructure projects in natural gas and future fuels across Jemena’s portfolio.”

Whyte added that Wasco recently completed expansion projects for Jemena at Roma North and the Atlas Gas Compression Facilities in Queensland.

In 2021, the company completed the Western Sydney Green Hydrogen project in Horsley Park, New South Wales and is also finishing construction of the Malabar Biomethane Project and several other NSW pipeline and facility projects led by Jemena and its partner Zinfra.
